Goodbye, East

The book "Farewell, East" deals with the modern era of Turkey that arose in the first half of the twentieth century, and raised the slogan "Farewell East" as part of its declaration of secularism. The writer Nicolas Haddad deals with this historical period in a tight narrative form, in which he reviews its historical landmarks and prominent figures, and presents it as a "preamble" to a new era, through a series of real events that he witnessed himself, while the novel's events center between Ankara and Istanbul, where important historical events took place. Includes Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's struggle for the establishment of the Turkish Republic and the changes to the Ottoman Caliphate.

نقولا حداد، الصحفي والعالم والشاعر، يُعد من رواد النهضة العربية، وُلِد في بلدة جون بلبنان عام 1878م، حيث حصل على تعليم متنوع في مدرسة صيدا الأمريكية، وبدأ مسيرته الأكاديمية بدراسة الصيدلة وحصوله على شهادتها عام 1902م. تأثر بفكر التنوير والثورة الفرنسية، وعمل بنشاط كمحرر في عدة صحف مصرية بارزة مثل الأهرام والمحروسة، وساهم في تأسيس جريدة المحبة المدرسية في صيدا والحكمة المدرسية في بيروت. يُعتبر حداد من الكتّاب البارزين بإنتاجه الأدبي الغني الذي شمل الروايات والمسرحيات والمؤلفات الفلسفية والاجتماعية، ونُشرت قصائده في مجلة الضياء. سافر إلى أمريكا لفترة لإصدار جريدة الجامعة وعاد لمصر حيث أسس صيدلية وتابع عمله في التحرير الصحفي حتى وافته المنية عام 1954م، حيث تُذكر مساهماته الكبيرة في الفكر والأدب العربي.
