Love from the first poem; The poem "The Withered Narcissus," which Mr. Edward Smith recited at his graduation ceremony at the University of Cambridge in Britain, was unknowingly igniting the first spark of love in the heart of "Lady Louisa Benton," who in turn did not know that Edward had written his poem based on some inspiration. He read it from her sweet poetry. In his novel, Nicolas Al-Haddad takes us to the corridors of that beloved and delicate debate, which is only disturbed by a collision with a less delicate reality. This is because Edward's abundance of knowledge and his great literature did not allow him to accept the Benton family as a husband to their daughter, in light of his humble social status that was evident before their eyes. Will the lovers surrender, will the family of noble lords acquiesce, or will a secret hidden in an old blue suitcase be able to turn the tide of the story and create an unexpected ending?

نقولا حداد، الصحفي والعالم والشاعر، يُعد من رواد النهضة العربية، وُلِد في بلدة جون بلبنان عام 1878م، حيث حصل على تعليم متنوع في مدرسة صيدا الأمريكية، وبدأ مسيرته الأكاديمية بدراسة الصيدلة وحصوله على شهادتها عام 1902م. تأثر بفكر التنوير والثورة الفرنسية، وعمل بنشاط كمحرر في عدة صحف مصرية بارزة مثل الأهرام والمحروسة، وساهم في تأسيس جريدة المحبة المدرسية في صيدا والحكمة المدرسية في بيروت. يُعتبر حداد من الكتّاب البارزين بإنتاجه الأدبي الغني الذي شمل الروايات والمسرحيات والمؤلفات الفلسفية والاجتماعية، ونُشرت قصائده في مجلة الضياء. سافر إلى أمريكا لفترة لإصدار جريدة الجامعة وعاد لمصر حيث أسس صيدلية وتابع عمله في التحرير الصحفي حتى وافته المنية عام 1954م، حيث تُذكر مساهماته الكبيرة في الفكر والأدب العربي.
