Rain

"I realized that Davidson had guided him to love this woman, as much as he went to extremes in persecuting her... And he realized that the man who struggled to save the prostitute from the darkness of sin, and to purify her From the filth of vice, his resolve weakened at the end of the struggle... so he himself surrendered to sin... and after that, he refused to do anything except atone for his sin with his blood."
This is the poignant ending that the famous English novelist Somerset Maugham wanted for his masterpiece, "The Rains," which takes place in the tropical islands where a fanatical priest imposed his rule in the name of God. He met a playful seductress and besieged her until she surrendered to him, then he fell into sin with her (he lusted after her all the time without knowing it), and then he committed suicide and the seducer screamed that all men are pigs.
