This novel is considered one of the most important works of the Russian novelist Tolstoy, as it deals with the psychological conflict that the wealthy Russian officer went through because of the love story that overwhelmed his feelings, and how he will convince his family of this marriage, especially since the Russian people see other peoples as less than them, including the Caucasian people. The love story ends with the girl's love turning into intense hatred, due to the killing of many Caucasian people at the hands of the Russian army.
