Shepherds' Poetry.. Greek Literature in the Era of Alexandria
Über das eBook
In this book, he finds a general summary of the characteristics of an important era in the history of Greek literature, which is the "Age of Alexandria," in which Egypt played a great role in preserving and developing the heritage of Greek thought. It encouraged the Greek writers who came to it after the decline of the glory of Athens, and they resided there, and made it their headquarters and the capital of their huge production. They invented new arts, explained ancient literature, commented on it, and carried out a broad scientific movement.
In this book, the reader will find a study and analysis of the poetry of shepherds, which was invented by Theocritus. It is a delicate art that is almost alien to Arabic literature because our poets, ancient and modern, did not know it and did not compose poems in it.
The author did his best to stay away from complex issues that upset the reader due to his lack of familiarity with the Greek and Latin languages. He contented himself with summarizing the life of Theocritus and showing the extent to which his poems were influenced by the environment of the country in which he lived. Then he mentioned the types of poetry in which he composed and the characteristics of each of them. He analyzed his poems about shepherds and explained his influence on the Greek and Roman poets who imitated him. He ended the book by translating selections from this poetry composed by him and those composed by his imitators. .
