The Ursitory

At the age of twenty-one, he wrote his first book, Ursitori, which we offer to your attention.
On the pages of the novel Ursitori, we are greeted by Roma - Mateo Maximoff always wrote this word with a capital letter. In the Romani language, a rom is a man - a gypsy from the Balkans or from one of the Eastern European countries. Rum is also used as a synonym for the word husband. A wife or a gypsy woman is romni. Using these traditional gypsy names, the author shows love and respect for his people.
In this, the very first book, we can feel Mateo Maximoff's closeness to the stories, customs and beliefs of the gypsies. He also emphasizes the role of women in gypsy society and makes us think about who they are - the real angels of destiny?
This book was born from the author's life experiences, stories and memories of his relatives, which he listened to attentively during his childhood and youth, and then, with unusual care for his age, collected into a vast collection of oral stories to put them on paper for the first time, thus giving us the opportunity to better understand the world of the Roma.
It took Mateo Maximoff only thirty-one days to write this book, while he was in prison on false charges. His lawyer advised him to use as a plot the events that led to his arrest.

Матео родился в 1917 году в Барселоне, в Испании, где его семья нашла убежище после скитаний по многим странам Восточной и Западной Европы, в попытках спастись от Первой мировой войны.
