آر أوستن فريمان (1862–1943) هو كاتب بريطاني يُعتبر أحد رواد أدب القصص البوليسية. وُلِد في لندن ودرس الصيدلة قبل أن يتخصص في الطب في مستشفى ميدلسكس. قام بتطوير نوع جديد من القصص البوليسية يُعرف بـ"القصة البوليسية المعكوسة"، حيث يُظهر الجريمة والجاني في البداية ثم يتبع ذلك جهود المحقق لحل اللغز. تتناول معظم قصصه شخصية الدكتور ثورندايك، الذي أصبح رمزًا للذكاء والتحليل في الأدب البوليسي. نشر أولى قصصه في عام 1907 واستمر في الكتابة حتى وفاته في عام 1943، محققًا تأثيرًا كبيرًا على أدب الجريمة.
