Modern English Literature
Über das eBook
This book is a presentation and criticism of English literature during a certain period (until the middle of the twentieth century), and during this period writers emerged who rebelled against the traditions in this literature and renewed it. The author tried to explain to the reader the significance of this renewal, which does not mean renewal in life. This is what we understand from the English innovators discussed in the book; English literature relates to life, is influenced by it, and influences it. It criticizes the way of life more than it criticizes the way of writing. This is in contrast to what we find among the traditional literary class in Egypt, where there is great interest in the written style, while there is no interest at all in the way of life. Traditional literature, for example, is concerned with Al-Jahiz's writing style and emulates it, and is not concerned, for example, with the Egyptian peasant's way of life, criticizing it and asking for its reform.
But modern European literature, especially English literature, is the literature of life; He criticizes livelihoods and goals and makes them his subject, whether in a story or an article. Therefore, it relates to all types of human activity. The writer has his opinion on science, industry, economics, marriage, education, and journalism.
