In his youth, the hero of the novel used to sit on the threshold of the outer door of his room, looking at space and the distant hills, feeding on books, and imagining that nothing would prevent him from jumping behind those hills to search for the meaning of both life and immortality, but he did not encounter anything except Poverty, hunger, nightmares... and the brink of madness.
