One thousand and one nights

She said: It has reached me, O happy king, that before the caliphate of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, there was a king in the city of Damascus called Omar al-Nu'man. He was one of the great tyrants who had conquered the kings of the Chosroes and the Caesars. No fire could warm him, and no one could compete with him in a racecourse. When he became angry, flames of fire would come out of his nostrils. He had ruled all the regions. He executed his rule in all the villages and cities. All the servants of God obeyed him, and his armies reached the farthest parts of the country. The East and the West and everything between them, from India, Sindh, China, Yemen, Hijaz, Abyssinia, Sudan, Syria, Rome, Diyar Bakr, the islands of the seas, and all the famous rivers on earth, such as the Sihoun and the Jayhoun, the Nile and the Euphrates, came under his rule.

Part Two

She said: It has reached me, O happy king, that Abu al-Hasan took the slave girl to the house of Ali ibn Bakkar and made her stand at the door. He entered the house, and when Ali ibn Bakkar saw him, he was happy with him. Abu al-Hasan said to him: The reason for my coming is that so-and-so sent his slave girl to you with a note containing his greetings to you, and he mentioned in it that the reason for his delay was an excuse he had. The slave girl is standing at the door, so will you permit her to enter? Ali said: Let her in. Abu al-Hasan indicated to him that she was the slave girl of Shams al-Nahar, and he understood the indication. When he saw her, he was moved and happy and said to her by sign: How is the master, may God heal him and restore him to health? She said: Fine. Then she took out the paper and gave it to him. He took it, kissed it, read it, and gave it to Abu al-Hasan.

Part Three

She said: It has reached me, O auspicious King, that when the son of King Azdshir was hidden in the garden, and the daughter of the king and the old woman came down and walked among the trees, the son of the king saw her and fainted from the intensity of his love. When he came to, he found her out of his sight and hidden from him in the trees, so he sighed from the depths of his heart. The old woman continued to show the king's daughter in the garden until she reached the place where the king's son was, and behold, the old woman said: O Hidden of kindnesses, we are safe from what we fear. When the king's son heard the sign, he came out of his tent and was amazed at himself and got lost and walked among the trees with a height that put the branches to shame. His forehead was covered with sweat and his cheeks became like the twilight. Glory be to God the Almighty for what He created. Then the king's daughter glanced at him and looked at him. When she saw him, she stared at him for a long time and saw his beauty and handsomeness, his height and his moderation, his eyes that flirt with gazelles and his stature that exposes the branches of the cypress tree. He astonished her mind and stole her heart and shot her with the arrows of his eyes into her heart!
Part Four
She said: It has reached me, O happy king, that when the second minister finished his speech, he concluded it by saying: May your reward and the outcome of your affair be good. Then the third minister stood up and said: Be glad, O just king, with the immediate good and the future reward; because everyone whom the people of the earth love, the people of heaven love.
