Metamorphoses, or The Golden Donkey: A Novel

Lucius Apuleius (c. 124 – c. 180 AD) is one of the most prominent writers of the decline of the Roman Empire. Originally from North Africa, he was a famous orator, lawyer, and priest in Carthage, renowned not only for his eloquence but also for his wit. His work reflects the contradictory and complex times.

"Metamorphoses, or the Golden Ass" is Apuleius's most famous ancient novel, which still captivates readers today. This is the story of a young Greek, Lucius, whose journey through Thessaly turns into a series of incredible events. Succumbing to curiosity, the hero observes the magical rites of a powerful sorceress and decides to conduct a magical experiment himself, which ends in failure: instead of birds, Lucius turns into a donkey, retaining his mind and able to observe other worlds.

In the form of a donkey, Lucius shows a scenario in the most unexpected and sometimes frank scenes of an easy life. The novel satirically ridicules charlatan priests, exposes the floggings of society, and reveals the contradictions of the "family relations" of the ancient Roman gods. Humor, wit, and wisdom are combined in the story of the goddess Venus - a grumpy freshness, good-natured Jupiter, charming Cupid and his wife Psyche.
