Knowing Satan was the beginning of the distinction between good and evil, and there was no distinction between good and evil before Satan became aware of his attributes and deeds, the types of his power, and the secrets of his goals and intentions.
It was darkness in which there was no distinction between good and evil, nor between good and ugly. When man distinguished light, he knew darkness, and when he was able to perceive morning, he was able to contrast it with night and evening.
The world was worthy of every deed that came from it, and there was no difference between its good deeds and its bad deeds except that this is good and this is bad, otherwise this is believed and this is feared. As for this being permissible and this not being permissible in the scale of morals, it did not have a meaning in speech, and it did not have - a fortiori - a meaning in the mind and conscience. Ability was everything.
