Tears

It saddened me to see in the darkness and stillness of that night this poor, miserable boy alone in a cold, bare room! He does not protect himself from the ordinary cold with a blanket or fire, and he complains of the worries of life or some of its hardships, before he reaches the age of worries and sorrows, from where he does not find a consolation or helper beside him.
And I said: "There must be behind this miserable, pale sight a sick, tormented soul that is melting between its ribs, and its body collapses towards it like a crumbling tent."
I remained standing there, not leaving him, until I saw him folding his book, leaving his seat, and going to bed.
